The Jávea U3A Friends of Avinenca group are combining with other FoA members to take part in a special 'Teach In" day on Friday 11th May.
The subject will be 'How to read a River'.
The Director of LIMNE, the Valencian organisation that is responsible for monitoring the health of our rivers will be explaining the holistic approach that is taken when assessing the quality of the rivers. This will include surveys of the flora, fauna, bird and aquatic life.
Places are limited. If you would like to join us please apply through our website www.avinenca.es or talk to Paul Pruden at this month's U3A meeting.
The Jávea U3A group of the Friends of Avinença, along with similar groups nearby, is made up of a group of people who are interested in learning about the natural, historical and cultural heritage of the Land of Valencia, that is the Provinces of Alicante, Valencia and Castillon.
How do we operate? We are involved in the local area by assisting in the activities involved in maintaining the local wetland lagoon area by the beach in Moraira and by taking part in 'special interest' visits. The visits are guided in English and are usually whole day trips. With the Friends of Avinença, we have privileged access to different venues, always with expert guides. On some of these trips we combine with similar groups from nearby U3As.
One coach makes each trip. Places on these pilot trips are allocated in proportion to the membership
numbers of each of the U3As. Early booking & payment is essential if you wish to take part in these
trips. Payment can be made through the Friends of Avinença web site
www.avinenca.es.
We visit a wide range of places within the Land of Valencia, mainly by one-day trips. Subject to availability of seats, any member of Jávea U3A can come along with us.
Venues include Natural Parks, traditional farms, archaeological sites, conservation projects, historic sites and buildings. In many cases access to the "General Public" is denied but, having a privileged status, we are able to enter and be guided around these places.
If you would like to become involved in our activities and would like to join us on some of our trips please either visit the Friends of Avinença web site or email Paul Pruden at at the address above, or come and talk to us at the monthly U3A General Meetings.

Other Activities
Every Tuesday.
Now, for the winter months, starting at 10:00, there will be members taking part in activities at the Lagoon behind the Ampola beach in Moraira. We are planning two sessions, the one in the morning and a second one starting at 14:00. Both will last about 2 hours. If you would like to take part, or find out more, please contact Trevor Kemp at
teulada.forall@yahoo.es.
We have a need for ‘talkers’ at the site who will be prepared to tell watchers about our activities and hopefully get them to join in.
However, below is a brief synopsis of our activities at the lagoon site.
The Seniller Lagoon Project in Moraira.
We started on this project at the end of last year. The first group of folk to become active was the birding group. Those who are knowledgeable about the birds to be found in or around the lagoon area have been helping those who are less experienced. Over the winter period over 40 different species have been identified, the sightings corroborated and tabulated. The report has been submitted to Teulada Town hall and passed on to the authorities in Valencia to become part of a nationwide survey.
This an ongoing
activity and if you are interested in taking part, then please visit the Friends of Avinença web site
www.avinenca.es and
click on ‘Projects’.
Meanwhile the site clearance group have been active, assisting in clearing much of the vegetation that was cut down at the turn of the year. The flora group, which is tasked with identifying and cataloguing all the plants in the lagoon area and is raising some of the endangered plants from seed collected locally. Meanwhile the group tasked with removing the exotic fauna is awaiting the end of the wildlife breeding season before starting operations.
The enthusiasm and professionalism of our members has been noticed by the local authorities and we have been asked to become more involved in the activities of the town. Again, if you would like to know more then visit the Friends of Avinença website and become a member (membership is free). We will shortly be looking for a similar project in the Jávea/Denia area, assuming we get enough support.
