2nd May (Fiesta on 1st) 11.30 am |
Dee Craig | The Infanta, The Prince and Two Thrones. Any 15 Century branch of Ladbrokes would have given you pretty long odds on either Isabella or Ferdinand ever ascending the thrones of Castile and Aragon. Both were born of second marriages, both had ambitious mothers and the only way they would succeed was the result of suspicious deaths, Papal dispensations to avoid incestuous betrothals and furtive journeys through enemy territory. Mad relatives, civil war, weak kings and interfering adjacent countries, all conspired to deny them the dreams they had of a united Spain. Their story proves that fact is much stranger than fiction. |
5th June 11.30 am |
Cheda Panajotovic | Your Manet or Your Monet? A look into the development of ‘Impressionism’ in latter 19C Paris. From a tentative start by a few artists who were refused hanging space at the Paris Salon, we shall examine how many decided to take a leap into the future and by so doing making Paris into the European Art capital for a few decades. We shall look at examples of works by the artists whom we now accept as ‘The Greats’ as well as of those whose works we may have seen but whose names tend to escape us. |
If you would like to be included on a mailing list for these lectures please email your interest to the Group Leader at the address above. You will be kept informed of forthcoming lectures and reminded about the next planned lecture.
