30th MAY 2012
“From Ancient Greece to London E15: The Olympic Story” by Peter Atkinson.
Peter will begin with the development of the games at Olympia and their place in Greek society, from their 776BC origins to their abolition around 400AD with Christian suppression of the worship of pagan gods. We shall then explore the evolution of the modern games from Athens in 1896 to London in 2012. In addition to some remarkable athletic performances and examples of international harmony, it is a story of rampant nationalism, political manipulation, boycotts, terrorism, conflict between amateurism and professionalism, commercialisation, corruption, and cheating.
27th JUNE 2012
BUDGET AIRLINES by Alan Blake.
Alan Blake is a retired pilot who will be giving us an insight into what goes on behind the scenes of a budget airline. Most of us will have experienced use of these airlines, and we should be given some detail on the background and reasons for the various problems and frustrations some of us may have experienced?

INHERITANCE TAX by Carlos Baos
31st OCTOBER 2012
JAIL TALES by Chris Duffin
Chris Duffin will once again be regaling us with more and different anecdotes of her interesting and very amusing experiences as the first woman governor into HMP Strangeways and the notorious Dartmoor Prison. She has recently written a book entitled "Jail Tales" in which she recounts some of the many stories and incidents from her twenty-year career both as a lowly 'screw' and as a prison governor. Whether it's flying out of the UK with a briefcase full of class A drugs, talking to the BBC News in her nightie, displaying a naked hunk's willy on her office wall, or having Myra Hindley as her tea-lady, these tales will amuse, entertain and definitely change your view of life behind bars. Her talk will also include anecdotes that are not mentioned in the book.
